Changes in enterprise IT means changes in decision-making

It’s always interesting to hear stories from colleagues about the old days of IT. They recount tales about some of the integrations and projects they single-handedly spear-headed, and it can be amazing how different the ecosystem looks today. Workers throughout an enterprise now have input in IT decisions. They can suggest a new solution, and it’s in use in a matter of days. As a result, the stack keeps growing, and IT’s charged with keeping it all working at optimal levels. In the past, overprovisioning was the answer. This isn’t feasible any longer, though. More people in a business have influence over IT decisions, and IT cost optimization is increasingly critical. The decision-making process around spending on large expansions to infrastructure needs to change, with a greater focus moving to optimizing what’s already in place.

Don’t fix what isn’t broken

Even with more people involved in integrating new software and applications throughout the enterprise, overall infrastructure health remains IT’s responsibility, and it’s that team’s job to redirect processes that are negatively impacting the performance of their domain. These teams are beginning to recognize that instead of throwing money at every problem, decisions related to infrastructure purchasing and provisioning must address inefficiency. Performance issues are frequently caused by misconfigurations and other problems. The answer isn’t always more capacity and horsepower, and assuming it is often proves costly for a lot of companies.

As is evidenced my most every company focusing on migrating to the cloud, big-money investments in IT infrastructure can be perilous in the current IT ecosystem and may even prove entirely wasteful. Infrastructure performance management (IPM) centers on using what’s already in place to its highest standard, and then preparing the infrastructure for only the migrations and upgrades that are truly valuable for the company’s bottom line, agility and output. With this type of holistic solution in place, IT can focus on actually solving their infrastructure issues instead of painting over them with unnecessary upgrades.

Evolve IT decisions alongside your business

Optimizing existing infrastructure with a comprehensive and highly accurate diagnostic platform that points to real problems will save companies substantially, both in terms of finances, resources and time. The decisions we make in IT have to evolve as our departments have. Other departments have an influence over software spending because the business’s technology supports their goals, as well as those of the company; the process IT teams use to make their own decisions has to shift to reflect this new reality. Spending money on IT can’t just be about making something work for a while. IT investments have to focus on promoting the overall well-being of the ecosystem for any spend to make sense.
