Healthcare IT needs a focus on performance in the face of greater complexity

For healthcare IT administrators, the last few years have been quite hectic. Almost universally, hospitals and other facilities have been forced into upgrades and adjustments to their IT infrastructures. Whether in response to new regulations or out of necessity, electronic medical records and other newer solutions are staples in health IT now. Many have opted for SaaS applications and other cloud platforms as part of these upgrades. The influx of new applications and regulatory pressure to adhere to industry standards have made IT performance an especially critical talking point for IT administrators in healthcare.

Downtime, latency extensions not acceptable

Any enterprise IT decision-maker will tell you outages and extended latency periods are the problems that lead to lost revenue and angry end users. In healthcare, an unavailable application or medical record can mean the loss of life. Healthcare IT needs to be able to guarantee IT availability and performance at defined benchmarks. There’s zero room for error. It’s good to see increased adoption of electronic medical records and other IT solutions, if only to bring a system that needed a thrust into modern times where it needed to be. Adoption can’t be the end, though. There must be protocol and technology in place to guarantee performance for those enhanced systems, not just availability.

Vendor-neutral performance monitoring a must in healthcare IT

Integrating SaaS and other cloud services into existing infrastructures calls for performance monitoring capabilities that can identify problems irrespective of the vendor who developed a piece of software or hardware. Applications, VMs and other technology built into an infrastructure can make it quite difficult to pinpoint a specific problem, especially when the monitoring solution is tied to a particular vendor. In many ways, healthcare IT has unique demands and needs. However, it’s no different than any other enterprise in this regard. Health IT infrastructure is made up of components from a number of vendors, and vendor-neutral performance monitoring keeps them functioning optimally.

There have unquestionably been some headaches along the way in health IT. Compliance is a constant source of trepidation, as is the ongoing demand for infrastructures to work and work quickly. The pressure on health IT administrators is substantial – comprehensive performance management platforms offer a solution.
