With the new year here, it wouldn’t feel right if our blog didn’t feature a few predictions about how we see things progressing in 2017.
At Virtual Instruments, we’re focused on performance monitoring and analytics-driven insights for proactively managing your IT infrastructure. Let’s face it, though every IT organization running business-critical applications needs real-time, unified views into every technology it deploys (software-defined, flash storage, public clouds, converged, hybrid, etc.), and more importantly, the data-driven insights gleaned from it—this isn’t a prediction for 2017, it’s a fact of life. Our goal is to help customers move past domain-specific reporting and achieve a complete, high fidelity view of their dynamic application workloads and the infrastructure that delivers them. This isn’t just a change in technology, it’s an evolution in the way IT teams interoperate and collaborate.
IT teams will increase collaboration across all functions and evolve more towards a managed services model. So what does this mean for the industry? A huge shift towards services-based, workload-specific approaches. For Bimodal IT, greater emphasis will be placed on enabling the agile organization, with a focus on rapid application evolution, time-to-market, and tighter business unit alignment.
On the cultural side, with more focus on collaboration and unified views of end-to-end infrastructure performance throughout the entire organization, we’ll see companies start to evolve their cultures to align with DevOps and continuous delivery approaches. Teams will become more agile as they start to support the on-demand, service-oriented approach their end users require. This agility will converge across all IT functions.
The sheer amount of data available, and the number of technology solutions used in each data center is enough to confound even the most efficient technology organizations. The only way companies can benefit from the Big Data generated by their data centers is to leverage a platform that enables them to collaborate with confidence by giving them an authoritative understanding of how workload performance is affected no matter what changes occur. This is almost exactly what DevOps is set up to do, so we expect the methodology to gain significant traction in the coming year.
Technology advancement is ever changing, and we expect some really exciting technology to be available in 2017. Amidst this excitement, it’s important to remember that every technology change could require significant cultural change. We’ll be keeping our eyes on both sides in what promises to be an interesting year ahead.
